Micro markets today…and tomorrow

In 2014, it is no longer just the forward-thinking operators launching micro markets. It is vendors in every market, of every size and every level of vending technology, and it’s growing fast. What’s driving this innovation? In a word, consumers.

Consumers want variety. They want value, more payment options and fresh food ingredients. Micro markets meet all of these demands and in a way that give operators more insight, control and merchandising opportunities than they ever had before. Micro market suppliers have reported an increase in calls from vending operators looking to launch a micro market because one of their top locations said a competitor just pitched them a market and they want it. While perhaps not the best way to enter a new segment of the industry, it clearly shows we have gone beyond industry-spurred change and are now answering the consumers’ demands for this new, unattended retail foodservice. It’s a great business opportunity now, but will its growth be sustained for the next 10 years?

Vending MarketWatch Compares Managing Micro Markets to Vending

Should micro markets and vending be managed separately?

In a recent report in Vending Marketwatch they do a good comparison to managing micro markets to vending.   Simply put, micro markets and vending are very different businesses with distinctly different support, operational and management functions. As our businesses change to include both, our organizations need to evolve as well, assigning specific resources to best handle the unique and very different functions of each.

Perhaps the area that is the most fundamentally different from the vending organization is the ability of micro markets to merchandise and promote to consumers. Very few consumer promotions are run within vending due to the difficulty of execution, the inability to easily and quickly change machine prices, etc. Micro markets are essentially small retail stores with very robust software that supports a full range of promotional programs — discount pricing over a specific time period, bundling of different products or “two-for” pricing, loyalty programs, etc. In vending, we have simply never had the need (or opportunity) for merchandising and promotional management resources. Importantly, every retail channel has proven that consumer promotions drive incremental sales and profits. As such, every micro market operator needs to embrace the opportunity to promote products in a manner simply not available in vending. Broad variety merchandising and managing consumer promotions are completely new functionalities associated with micro market operations, which require organizational resources to be effectively managed.
Simply put, micro markets and vending are very different businesses with distinctly different support, operational and management functions. As our businesses change to include both, our organizations need to evolve as well, assigning specific resources to best handle the unique and very different functions of each.

Vending machines have been a part of our daily lives for years. Now a Mobile company is changing the face of vending in Alabama.

Carts Blanche took the old idea of coin-operated businesses and turned it into a grocery store on wheels.

VendaCarts are mobile units designed to bring vending machines to rural areas and outdoor events. Carts Blanche’s website also reports the device is a hit at construction and temporary work sites.

Customers craving a mid-day snack can simply walk up to VendaCart, choose a snack and pay with cash or debit card. Some VendaCarts even include a mobile ATM.

VendaCarts start around $27,000 and can cost up to $40,000. The cost includes Wi-Fi, Facebook and Twitter capabilities, along with custom signs.

Carts Blanche also has other mobile businesses to choose from, including VendaCarts, VendaMarts, VendaPromotions and VendArcades.

Genius Vending Machine Feeds Stray Dogs In Exchange For Recycled Bottles

This Genius Vending Machine Feeds Stray Dogs In Exchange For Recycled Bottles       stray-dog-food-vending-machine-recycling-pugedon-4

A company in Turkey called Pugedo has developed Smart Recycling Boxes. It’s a vending machine of sorts as when you recycle your plastic container into the box at the top, it knows to dispense some food into the container below. Now it’s not going to be a turkey sandwich but rather dog food. The boxes are helping to feed homeless animals in the neighbourhood. Now while you might be thinking why encourage stray dogs in the city, the reality is that they exist and they don’t deserve to go hungry. So in addition to food for the four-legged strays, it also provides water to the animals. You can pour your leftover water into the recycling box and it funnels down into the water bowl below. Recycle and you help feed stray dogs. How sweet is that!

  • Feral-friendly invention has been introduced in Istanbul city centre
  • Inventor Engin Girgin says it kills two birds with one stone
  • Every bottle or can inserted releases a portion of food for an animal
  • Profit made from recycled bottles covers cost of the pet food
  • Vending machine is now being distributed to 20 cities outside Turkey

Not only do the boxes encourage recycling to help the environment, the recycled bottles cover the cost of the food

and the hungry dogs get a decent meal. Sounds like a win win situation for everyone involved. Yay Pugedo! Way to

be innovative and caring at the same time! Now the next step is helping to find these dogs good homes so they

don’t have to live on the streets but one step at a time I suppose.

ATM Becomes Automated Thanking Machine!

TD turns ATMs into Automated Thanking Machines to create some very special moments for customers across Canada.

th

Simple thanks means so much. That’s the theme of this video. Oh sure, we know it’s a commercial for a bank, but it’s pretty hard not to get a little teary eyed watching them turn an ATM into an “Automated Thanking Machine”. And there are some beautiful stories and very deserving people getting thanks in this video.

The bank decided to say thanks some of their regular customers by providing a little thanks. There’s the mom who’s daughter is battling cancer in Trinidad, to the longtime Toronto Blue Jays baseball fan, who gets to throw out the first pitch at a major league baseball game. It’s pretty amazing how a simple thank you can make someone’s day.
